Avocado Oil for a No-Recipe Kitchen: A Friday Favorite

Avocado oil has resoundingly become the one bottle I reach for no matter which meal formula I'm working from that night. It's neutral enough to disappear into a dish rather than announce itself, which is exactly what you want from the 'sauce' or cooking-fat part of a formula. You know, something that supports whatever you're making instead of shoving it to the side and taking over.

If ‘meal formula’ intrigues you, you can read this week’s Tuesday post all about it.

Avocado Oil as a Formula-Friendly Pantry Staple

Avocado oil works across nearly every formula in this week's Tuesday post. You can use it for roasting for a one-pan meal, whisked into a quick, lighter vinaigrette, or drizzled over a grain bowl at the end. Its smoke point is notably high (often cited around 500°F for refined avocado oil, although this varies by brand, so it’d be worth checking your specific bottle), so it holds up to roasting and searing without needing a separate oil for high heat.

When I first became aware of the dangers of seed oils and learned how superior avocado oil was, I made the switch and pretty much never looked back. I use it for all of my roasting because, as I like to say to my Beau, my favorite oven temperature is 400°.

Why Avocado Oil Makes a Difference in a Solo Kitchen

One good all-purpose oil means one less decision standing between you and dinner, which is the whole point of cooking from a formula instead of a recipe. Start with a single bottle and let it replace whatever specialty oils have been sitting half-used in the back of your cabinet. Just see how it goes, no pressure. There’s no need to complicate it when just one small change can make a no-recipe kitchen feel a little bit more comfortable.
