I was in need of a transitional spot. A place in my home for the timeframe between waking up to settling into the work day. A spot where my mind would be prompted into recognizing that it was time to be conscious.
Mine being a busy household, I was also in need of a place where I could be isolated and uninterrupted. You know, keeping the sounds of galloping pomeranians outside the closed door. Well, a galloping pomeranian, I don’t want you to interpret that as a herd of poms because that would be inaccurate. But I’m also not mad when she gallops up and down the hallway.
Anyways, I started daydreaming about reading chairs and imagining them in a corner of my bedroom. It would be really nice to have a chair to curl up in and do my quiet morning routine in. A dedicated space in the evenings to reflect and write in my gratitude journal is an inspiring thought. I’m still working up to the evening routine.
While I wasn’t in the market to purchase the kind of chair I’d love right now, I did have a resource to borrow a chair and ottoman set that has resolved my need for the time being. Yay!
I actually quite love how this corner turned out, in spite of the chair not being my style of choice. It’s really very comfortable. It’s pleasant to look at. It’s practical because my bedside table fits so naturally next to it with all of my morning quiet time accoutrements. My grandfather’s lamp and the medicine cabinet all just makes it so cozy. The plaid blanket softens the modern motif of the pattern.
The next thing to do was to unpack some of my stored decor to add some more personality to the corner. I was careful to display items that I particularly loved because I didn’t want the cabinet to feel cluttered. I wanted a more curated feel and so I left many items I had displayed at my old place in their storage boxes.
You know, a thought just occurred to me and I think it’s something I will try with my overall home decor.
I remember hearing about how my sister-in-law would pack away some of my niblings’ toys when they were younger. They always received so many toys, too many to play with all the time. It would just cause overwhelm and a mess. She’d pack toys away for a time and then rotate the packed ones into use and pack away the used ones for a time. With this method, it felt like the kids had new toys and they’d actually play with all of them.
I think this is a concept that would be easy to incorporate into home decor, too. And more than just the obvious seasonal decor because everyone has certain decor items that they love so much and can be displayed year round. I think it’d be a nice balance between keeping stuff and not feeling too cluttered and closed in. It would be that nice space between minimalist and maximalist.
At some point I’ll be able to try out purposeful decor rotation. And when that time comes, I will be sure to let you know how it goes! (Oooh, I can write another post about organizing it all! I know you won’t be able to contain your excitement but that’s why I like you!)
I find this nook to be such a pleasant view. I also find it to be practical by way of providing me that transitional spot to start my day. And since adding this comfortable reading chair to this corner, I also find it to be a suitable work space. It has become one of my favorite spots for everyday living. And who would’ve thought it’d give me a lesson of how I can evolve my home style!
Is there a nook you especially love in your home? Tell me in the comments!
