There’s hardly anything that says “summer” like cooking burgers on a grill. For quiet dinners at home, for crowds at a backyard party, or spur of the moment family coming over on a Saturday. Burgers and summer are synonymous.
But what about when you don’t have an outside grill? What do you do then? Or, what if there’s a torrential downpour and thunder and lightning when you have an extremely strong hankering for a burger? What are you supposed to do!
The answer is found in your cupboard and it is a tool you use any time of year! I suggest a cast iron skillet, but if you don’t have one, you do not need to run out and buy one.
Some people might even say that burgers come out better than on a fire grill because it’s the griddle aspect of cooking a burger that really keeps the juices in and what makes the burger taste so freaking good.
The key about cooking burgers in a cast iron skillet is not to go too fast. For some people (ahem, it’s me, I’m some people), cooking high and fast is the only method they know. You don’t want to do that in this case.
Tips on cooking burgers in a cast iron skillet:
Get the pan hot with just a drizzle of oil.
2) Add the burgers as a ball and flatten with a spatula.
3)Allow to cook about half way before flipping over and finish cooking on the other side.
We typically keep the seasonings simple. Salt and pepper, maybe a steak seasoning mix, garlic and onion powder. Simple can be very comforting.
If we were to get fancy, though, well, then perhaps I’d add some Worcestershire sauce or chop up fresh rosemary I just picked from my herb garden and add that in. Yum!
And whether you decide to eat on a bun or bun-less, a nice pasta side or green salad pairs perfectly!
Until next time, I’ll keep the kettle warm and the cushions fluffed!
Happy homemaking, friends!
